If you ever wondered what you need to make a short film, you’ll be surprised to find out how much effort it takes to create it.
In this article, I’m going to sum up all the necessary elements that make up a 10-minute movie.
Budget
Let’s start with the budget, because it all comes down to whether you have the funds to make it or not.
Working on this short film, I aim to pay everyone who takes part in it, from the script editors to the runner(s) on set. And this isn’t one of those movies you can make in your backyard because there’s a horse involved, so we need a horse trainer as well.
To come up with a budget, first you need to know who’s involved in the making of the film.
Here’s the brief list of the crew and cast we need:

So, around 21 people will work on this single 10-minute film for a long period of time to be able to show it to you, the audience.
But the crew and cast are not the only items of the budget.
We most likely need to pay for:
location
insurance
props
camera equipment
lighting equipment
as well as
catering
transportation
and accommodation for 3-4 days for the cast and crew.
The filming itself will be about 4 days, but preparation for the shoot will also have to be covered financially. For example, rehearsal time with the actors.
After post-production, there are further costs involved, like hiring a festival agent and paying for festival submissions as well.
That is how making this film will cost at least 4 million Ft/10 thousand euros, but most likely more.
How will we put together the required sum?
To be totally transparent, we will need some help. I have some money saved up, but that’s not much compared to what we need.
Therefore, I will be applying for funding to the National Film Institute of Hungary, where the film takes place and where I’m currently based. If we’re successful with the film, they are giving 70% of the budget and up to 16 million Ft (approx. 40 thousand euros). But apart from the 30% budget and an eligible production company, one of their requirements is that a Hungarian broadcaster needs to agree to screen the short film once it’s made.
That is why I will be looking for the help of a producer who is established in Hungary. I already worked with a Hungarian producer who is now reading the script. So, please cross your fingers for her to agree to collaborate on the film, which would mean being two steps closer to production.
Therefore, I’m really banking on this funding, but further investments will be required to gather the 30%.
There will be a crowdfunding campaign eventually, where we aim to give away tickets to the premiere and a downloadable copy of the film and other perks, so we hope to find supporters this way.
But the 30% budget doesn’t have to be money; it can be location or camera equipment as well, or even catering services or accommodation if we get some kind of sponsorship.

What’s happening now
While we’re putting the budget together, I’m in touch with a horse-therapist, who is reading the script for additional feedback on the material to make it as credible as possible.
I’m also in communication with a horse trainer, who might be working on the film.
I’ll be contacting the Hungarian Equine-therapy Association as well, in the hope that they’ll support the movie and spread the word about it to other therapists.
Furthermore, I’ll be contacting media organisations asking for interviews about the film and my motivation to make it to spread the word about the movie. In case you know any media organisations who might be interested in hearing about Far From It All, then email or message me as well.

Ha valaha is elgondolkodtál azon, mire van szükség egy rövidfilm elkészítéséhez, meg fogsz lepődni, mennyi munka áll mögötte.
Ebben a cikkben összefoglalom azokat az alapvető elemeket, amelyek egy 10 perces film létrejöttéhez szükségesek.
Költségvetés
Kezdjük a költségvetéssel, mert végső soron minden azon múlik, hogy rendelkezésre áll-e a szükséges anyagi háttér.
Ennél a rövidfilmnél az a célom, hogy minden közreműködőt kifizessünk, a forgatókönyv-szerkesztőktől kezdve egészen a forgatáson dolgozó asszisztensekig. Ráadásul ez nem egy olyan film, amit meg lehet csinálni a hátsó kertben, hiszen egy ló is szerepel benne, így szükségünk lesz egy lótrénerre is.
Ahhoz, hogy költségvetést tudjunk készíteni, először tudnunk kell, kik vesznek részt a film elkészítésében.

Ez összesen körülbelül 21 embert jelent, akik hosszú időn keresztül dolgoznak ezen az egyetlen 10 perces filmen, hogy végül te, a néző, láthasd.
De a stáb és a szereplők nem az egyetlen tételek a költségvetésben.
Nagy valószínűséggel fizetnünk kell még:
helyszínért
biztosításért
kellékekért
kamerafelszerelésért
világítástechnikáért
valamint:
étkezésért
utazásért
szállásért 3–4 napra a stáb és a szereplők számára
A forgatás maga körülbelül 4 napig tart majd, de az előkészítés költségeit is fedezni kell. Például a próbák idejét a színészekkel.
Az utómunka után további kiadások is felmerülnek, például egy fesztiválügynök alkalmazása és fesztiválnevezési díjak.
Mindezek alapján a film elkészítése legalább 4 millió forintba (kb. 10 000 euróba) kerül, de valószínűleg ennél többe.
Hogyan fogjuk előteremteni ezt az összeget?
Teljes őszinteséggel: segítségre lesz szükségünk. Van némi megtakarításom, de ez messze nem elég ahhoz, amire szükségünk van.
Ezért pályázni fogok a Nemzeti Filmintézethez Magyarországon, ahol a film is készül és játszódik, és ahol jelenleg is élek. Ha sikerrel járunk, a költségvetés 70%-át biztosíthatják, akár 16 millió forintig (kb. 40 000 euróig). Ugyanakkor a fennmaradó 30% mellett egy elvárásoknak megfelelő produkciós cégre is szükség van, és az egyik feltételük az, hogy egy magyar televíziós csatorna vállalja a film egyszeri sugárzását.
Ezért keresek egy Magyarországon kapcsolatokkal rendelkező, tapasztalt producert. Már dolgoztam egy magyar producerrel, aki jelenleg olvassa a forgatókönyvet. Szorítsatok, hogy igent mondjon az együttműködésre, mert azzal két lépéssel közelebb kerülnénk a megvalósításhoz.
Tehát nagyon számítok erre a támogatásra, de a fennmaradó 30%-ot más forrásból kell előteremtenünk.
Közösségi finanszírozás és támogatás
Lesz egy közösségi finanszírozás-kampány is, ahol többek között premierjegyeket, letölthető filmet és egyéb jutalmakat kínálunk majd a támogatóinknak, így remélünk, tehát, hozzájárulókat találni a filmhez.
Fontos, hogy a 30% nemcsak pénz formájában valósulhat meg. Lehet például:
helyszín
kamerafelszerelés
világítástechnika
catering
szállás
vagy más szponzoráció formájában is.
Ezért, ha ismersz valakit, akinek van:

Jelenlegi folyamatok
Miközben a költségvetést állítjuk össze, kapcsolatban állok egy lovas terapeutával, aki véleményezi a forgatókönyvet, hogy minél hitelesebb legyen.
Egy lovas trénerrel is egyeztetek, aki valószínűleg részt vesz majd a filmben.
Fel fogom venni a kapcsolatot a Magyar Lovasterápia Szövetséggel is abban a reményben, hogy támogatják a projektet és segítenek terjeszteni a hírét.
Ezen felül médiamegkereséseket is tervezek, hogy interjúk révén beszélhessek a filmről és az elkészítése mögötti indítatásomról. Ha tudsz olyan médiát, akit érdekelhet a projekt, kérlek, írj nekem.
Rengeteg a teendő, és alig várom, hogy megoszthassam veletek az út minden lépését.
A tervem az, hogy minden szerdán küldök egy hírlevelet egészen a forgatásig, amit szeptemberre tervezünk.
